Week One: What Happened When I Went Too Hard (And Why Hydration Is My First Step to Lowering Inflammation)

It’s been one week since I made it my mission to lower my inflammation and get back to healthy, and man did this week fly by! I’m not sure if I’m going to sustain a weekly update but like I said in my first post, I’m just going to do what I can and see where it takes me.

This week has had some highs and lows, let me start off by explaining that I’m the kind of person that likes to go all in on something. That’s usually a good thing but when it comes to health it can be a little overwhelming and sometimes ill advised. So, this week I did have to pull myself back a bit from throwing all my tools at my main problem aka inflammation and slow it down. Because you know what happened? I went way too hard in my first week, ugh, I had a feeling that would happen.

Here’s what I did... I dehydrated myself. Not on purpose, of course, but inadvertently. I went a little heavy handed with the detox aspect and did the sauna maybe one or so too many times and ended up completely dehydrated with a major headache on Thursday that took me most of the day to fight off! Lesson learned... with that I decided to go S.L.O.W.

What I’m Doing Now

I’m starting with the foundations, hydration being number one and what this week’s main takeaway has been. The nutrition and supplements, sleep and working out are all important and I will highlight all of those as we go through this process, but for right now it’s Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

I hate to admit this but it’s something that has happened to me before. I’m usually so good about drinking water but sometimes I just forget to, I know others can relate. We just get busy working or doing things around the house and before you know it you’re two cups of coffee in and little to no water. But if I want to lower this inflammation the water must be drank, and that is that.

How Much Water Should You Actually Drink to Lower Inflammation?

For starters (and this may sound silly to some but) I have a large 40oz cup that I’m using. Ok, ok, it’s a Stanley cup, I know those are not “in” anymore, my teenager has filled me in on that. But in all seriousness, it works. Get yourself a cup that you want to drink out of, the larger the better!

  • My goal is to drink 60-80oz a day

    • You can get your water intake goal by multiplying your body weight by 0.67. If you are highly active or use the sauna like I do, you will need to add a few oz to make up for the fluid loss from sweating. (Don’t make the same mistake I did!)

  • I’m also adding electrolytes occasionally

    • If I’ve gone in the sauna for instance, or if there is a day that I particularly feel a little extra parched, I’ll just sprinkle in a pack. I use LMNT currently but you can also use a pinch of sea salt in water and add some lemon. I personally like the taste of the LMNT so as of today I’m sticking to that but, you do you!

It’s going to be a long process but this is how it needs to happen, low and slow!

I hope you follow along with this process.
